This research area is started by studying latent or hidden demand of investors that reflects in security prices and trading volumes. Securities here cover equities stocks, bonds, and derivatives. We can classify market microstructure research to several categories. This article has a main purpose to help readers understand introductory definitions, research boundary, and sub-fields in market microstructure area on the following topics: (1) Price formation and price discovery; (2) Market structure and design issues; (3) Information or market transparency; (4) Liquidity and Volatility; (5) Why people trade; (6) Transaction costs; and (7) Applications to other areas in finance.
